I LOVE THE BANJO. I've never been able to play more than a couple chords on the guitar, but I am rocking out on the banjo. Well, maybe not rocking out. But I can play lots and lots of chords on the banjo. Maybe it's because there are only 5 strings and it's an open G tuning. Either way, I'm so excited!
And I love love love the song Matrimony. It might be my new favorite song with a banjo in it. And I can play it! I want to start a band. Hmm... who wants to play anarchist bluegrass punk with me? |

The chords for Flicker (you know, the camp song) are the exact same as the chords for Baby I'm An Anarchist.
EDIT: Same with Today. |

We burned the old chicken coop.

The other day I finally brought myself to clean out my music library. I haven't done that the entire 3 years I've had this computer, so there was a lot of crap on it. I realized that I didn't need 12 Queen albums. Actually, no one needs 12 Queen albums. Other music that did not need to exist on my computer: Run DMC, the Grease soundtrack, terrible hipster music that I downloaded from music blogs and never listened to, low-quality live recordings of punk bands (especially when they contain the same songs as the studio albums, and the studio albums are only slightly better quality live recordings), Jim Morrisons's spoken word album, and an entire Cascada album (I kept the song Everytime We Touch for, um, sentimental reasons. [Side note: Yes, on the album it is spelled "everytime" rather than "every time".]).
Anyway, it's nice to be able to put my entire library on shuffle and not have to skip every other song. When I don't put the whole thing on shuffle I end up listening to one album over and over again until I'm sick of it. (I've been listening to Reinventing Axl Rose since, oh, spring break.) |

| DAMMIT |
[Jun. 30th, 2009|12:52 pm] |
This is the first time I've ever really wished I had a driver's license. IS ANYONE GOING SOUTH ON I-5 THIS FRIDAY NIGHT? I really really really would love a ride to the Round River Rendezvous (or an experienced hitching buddy). Seriously, that would be amazing. Yes, I've tried the ride board on the website. Yes, I've tried craigslist. I'm not too keen on hitch-hiking solo. Please please please? I can give you fresh organic veggies.
EDIT: I got an email back within 15 minutes and I was super excited but NOOOOO it was spam from someone in Switzerland who wants to wire me money. DAMMIT. |

To the nearest version of MS word (the one that comes with Vista),
I'm sorry I ever doubted you. If I had known that you can solve trig identities, the Pythagorean theorem, the binomial theorem, or many other formulas, I never would have questioned you.

If you harass the Marines try to engage the Marines in a conversation about US imperialism and why the military sucks, they'll call security on you. Even if you first impress them by doing 9 pull ups. |

| existential crisis of the day |
[May. 2nd, 2009|03:46 pm] |
I've been thinking that maybe I should make things easier for myself: instead of self-designing a major in agroecology, I could just get a conservation ecology degree and take some agriculture classes as electives. Because really, I'm not interested in large-scale crop production. I just want to save the world and grow my own food while I'm at it. (Also I really don't want to take animal science aka dissect animal penises time.)
I don't even have to declare my major until the beginning of my third year anyway, so I should probably stop worrying about it, especially when I have more pressing issues right now like three essays to write.
ALSO this is probably wishful thinking on my part, but if you were planning on sending me any mail out here, don't. I'll be home in a week, which is about how long it takes mail to get from the west coast to the east coast. Just send it to my home address, yo. |

| swine flu vs. cars |
[Apr. 28th, 2009|06:10 pm] |
Here's what yahoo news (sic) has to say about the swine flu: At least seven people were in U.S. hospitals with swine flu Tuesday as the number of cases nationwide rose to 64 and a federal health official warned that deaths were likely.
Most of the nation's confirmed cases were in New York, where the city health commissioner said "many hundreds" of schoolchildren were ill at a school where several students had confirmed cases of swine flu.
Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.
"I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," Besser said at an Atlanta news conference.
Here's what the article should say: At least 115 people in the US died today from car accidents. The number of deaths daily worldwide is close to 3000. Federal health officials warn that more deaths are likely.
The nation's confirmed cases are not limited to any particular area or age group - no matter where you go or what age group you examine, cars kill.
Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, car accidents account for 1.2 million deaths every year.
"I fully expect we will continue to see deaths from this scourge," Besser said at an Atlanta news conference. |
