Here's an article about the farm I worked on this summer - small-scale agriculture vs. agrobusiness and LNG.
According to one rough estimate, Berblinger reports, the farm is actually carbon negative, with its trees and other vegetation absorbing more carbon from the air than is produced by machinery and other sources of emissions. Hell yeah, I was the one who calculated that. |

Still coughing but I'M COUGHING UP PHLEGM!!!! Huzzah! I don't feel like shit anymore! This may have something to do with the fact that last night I found the thermostat for my side of the dorm and raised it from 55 to 75! I saw the doctor this morning and she said that not only am I not dying, my lungs sound awesome! I don't have to cancel my trip to see Maya starting tomorrow!
Whoo!
EDIT: I turned the thermostat up to 65, not 75. Whoa that would be very hot. |

Not only does this thing weigh 2.5 pounds, it has a webcam!

I will never cease to be amazed.
Now I have skype? Does anyone else actually use it? I have a feeling it'll be something in which I quickly lose interest, like IM. Yeah, add me or something - the username is veggies.for.breakfast . |

Hey Tofu: I just saw that "Alcohol" video. Holy shit, I feel 10 times dumber. I think I'm going to vomit.
For the rest of you, if you haven't seen it, please go watch the video for the song "Alcohol" by the Millionaires. You won't regret it. |

I generally think Michael Franti is a pretty awesome guy who writes awesome songs. I'm excited for his new album. This song is so damn catchy.
And then I saw this one.
Damn, I'm kind of disappointed. Obama is just another shithead politician. |

| in Hiroshima |
[Sep. 1st, 2009|08:35 pm] |
At a hostel in Hiroshima. Tomorrow I`m going to the Peace Park and Museum and maybe Miyajima for some hiking (it`ll be nice to get out of the city). Made friends with a bunch of Thai girls, their Japanese teacher and his wife, a guy from Australia, and a guy from New Zealand. Australian guy spoke only English, same with New Zealand guy, Thai girls spoke Thai and a tiny bit of Japanese but with super thick Thai accents so I couldn`t understand them, Japanese couple spoke Japanese and English (but New Zealand and Australia couldn`t understand them through the accents), and I speak English and Japanese. Oh and Japanese guy and his wife couldn`t understand New Zealand`s English or Australia`s English because of accents. I was doing quite a bit of translating. It was funny. Thai girls fed me dinner but all I could eat was rice and eggplant and onion tempura `cause there was lots of meat.
I can`t find an outlet that my laptop cord fits into so I`m on the public hostel computer and the keyboard KEEPS MESSING ME UP. Also it`s very hot and humid. Bleh bleh bleh. I can`t wait for Vermont weather. |

I had a dream that Ungar Furs closed and papers were revoked all around. And then I hung out with the lunch buddies at Baskin Robbins near my parents' house, except it wasn't actually Baskin Robbins.
This morning I found a review on the internet about a vegan restaurant in downtown Kyoto. Sadly, either the map I drew was wrong or it doesn't exist anymore. I got beans and rice (Japanese style, not Costa Rican style) instead. And TEA. I have a giant bag of loose-leaf tea now. That should last me quite a while. I went to another really old shrine. I think it was called the Heian shrine? I dunno, I was wandering around when I saw this from like 10 blocks away:

I love Engrish:

Tomorrow I'm taking a train to Hiroshima. I'll be there for two nights, then Osaka for two nights, then up to Sapporo. Aaaaand I get to see the Vermont crew in 6 days! |

I can now confirm the existence of exactly 3 punk kids in Japan. One of them works in a thrift store that reminds me of Portland (so many ironic t-shirts...) that was playing a punk cover of a Beatles song over the stereo.
This morning at breakfast I made friends with another German girl who speaks perfect English. She speaks English so well that we talked for a while about free trade and immigration. Holy crap, there's no way I could get anywhere close to talking about politics/human rights/imperialism in Japanese. We went out on an adventure to a really old temple in the woods. Then we went downtown and wandered around for a while. She had to go back to the hostel and work, so I stayed downtown for a while. I managed to get myself back to the hostel without getting completely lost. Whoo! Accomplishment!
Cooked dinner for myself - garlicky/oniony potatoes with broccoli. Om nom nom. I love vegetables.
FUN FACT OF THE DAY: Before World War II Japanese kids didn't have to wear uniforms to school. They picked that up from the Germans. After the war, Germany dropped uniforms for just about everything because it reminded them of the Hitler Youth. Japan didn't, and to this day everyone knows how Japanese schoolgirls dress. |

| adventures in Japanese food |
[Aug. 28th, 2009|08:12 am] |
I'm doing just about all of my own cooking here because it's the only way I can eat vegan (ingredient list checks are pretty much impossible when you can't read the alphabet in which they're written), plus it's way healthier and cheaper than buying prepared food. So I stocked up on veggies at the grocery store this afternoon. Hot peppers, eggplant, garlic, onions, mushrooms, and tofu. Then I got some dried beans. I thought they were those sweet red beans that they use for red bean paste. Wrong. They taste decent, but they're definitely not sweet red beans. I'm in a shared hostel room and the old lady who's got one of the other beds was watching me cook the beans. She laughed when she saw what I was making and jabbered something at me that I didn't understand. When I ate one to see if it was ready she told me not to. I'm not really sure why. I didn't ask her what I should have been doing differently because my Japanese is good enough that I can easily ask questions but I usually don't understand the answers.
I met someone from Germany who speaks perfect English and someone from England. We talked for a while. It was funny - although we all speak English, she was speaking with a German accent, he spoke with a British accent, and I spoke with a non-accent (or so I like to think). |

[Aug. 27th, 2009|04:49 am] |
I'M IN JAPAN.
Things that are free when you randomly get upgraded to a "Business Class" seat on an airplane to Japan:
-Udon -Soba -Sake -Wine -Lots and lots of other alcohol (Good thing I don't drink, because I was definitely offered lots of alcohol by the flight attendants.) -Green tea. SO MUCH GREEN TEA. -Slippers -Toothbrush -Toothpaste -A sweater to wear for the flight
The seat had one of those massage things built in. My back feels soooo good now. And the seat folded all the way down to a bed.
I would never pay for that crap (dumb luxury for the rich) but I'm not complaining when they give it to me for free. |
